Handmade Kilim Rugs from Northern Afghanistan

Every rug in this collection was made by hand in Northern Afghanistan, by weavers who have practiced this craft their entire lives. These are not mass-produced traditional rugs. Each kilim is selected individually for the quality of its wool, the precision of its weaving, and the strength of its design. What you see here is what we chose to bring home.

Unique Kilim Rugs for Living Rooms, Hallways, and Every Space In Between

Kilim rugs have a quality that is hard to explain until you see one in a room. The bold geometric patterns draw the eye without overwhelming the space. The flat weave keeps things feeling light and open. And because every piece is unique, there is no risk of walking into someone else's home and finding the same rug on their floor.

Our handmade kilim rugs work well in living rooms, dining areas, bedrooms, and hallways. They sit comfortably next to modern furniture and feel just as natural in a more traditional setting. People often tell us they bought one for a specific room and ended up rearranging the whole space around it.

If you are looking for unique rugs for your living room that actually say something about who you are, these are worth a close look.

How Kilim Rugs Are Made and Why It Matters?

A kilim is a flat-woven rug, which means the weft threads are woven directly through the warp to create the pattern, with no pile on top. The result is a firm, reversible rug that holds its shape well and wears evenly over time. It is a very different structure from traditional pile rugs, and one that many people come to prefer once they have lived with one.

The wool used in our handmade rugs is thick, natural, and sourced locally by the weavers themselves. It gives each kilim a warmth and texture that synthetic materials simply cannot replicate. These are handmade wool rugs in the truest sense. Nothing about the process has been shortened or mechanised.

The weaving tradition behind these kilims is the same one that produced handmade oriental rugs and traditional area rugs traded across Central Asia for centuries. The craft has not changed much because it does not need to.

Afghan Kilim Rugs with a Real Story Behind Them

The kilim tradition in Afghanistan goes back centuries. It was born out of necessity, among nomadic communities who needed durable, portable textiles for daily life. The patterns were not decorative choices in the modern sense. They identified the weaver's tribe, region, and family. Over generations, they became a language of their own.

NavaRugs works directly with weavers in Northern Afghanistan, in the same regions where Turkish kilim rugs and Afghan flat-weave traditions have been practised for hundreds of years. We visit the source, select pieces in person, and bring back only what meets our standard for quality.

When you buy a handmade area rug from us, you are not buying a product with a vague origin story. You are buying something made by a specific person, in a specific place, using skills they spent years learning. That is what makes each piece worth owning.
